Urban local bodies in the state manage a total of 54.91 million properties, of which 34.35 million properties are unauthorized. Although these properties are provided with public facilities such as drinking water, electricity, and roads, the current law does not provide for collecting property taxes from them.
Sources said the Cabinet's decision to allow collection of property tax from such constructions could result in total annual revenue of Rs 2,000 crore.
It is learned that a cabinet subcommittee has decided to revise the property tax on these properties so that it does not burden the poor and middle class people.
Normalization deadline
The cabinet sub-committee also reportedly recommended fixing a final deadline to ensure that unauthorized layouts in the state are not normalized. If an incorrect layout is discovered after this date, there is a provision for criminal proceedings against the developer in such cases. It also provides for initiating disciplinary action against the officials who give way to the development of such unauthorized layouts. The provisions include imposing a fine of Rs 100,000 on such officials. Officials said the state cabinet has approved such recommendations with strict provisions to curb unauthorized layouts.
It is learned that provisions have been made to ensure that all layout properties are registered only through e-AASTHI. Sources said the Cauvery software is related to registration of real estate and there is no provision for registering real estate in case of fraud.
