ChatGPT on Monday announced its latest flagship model, GPT-4o, available to both Plus and free users with multimodal features. The company also announced its first desktop app for macOS and confirmed that a Windows app will be released later this year.
The new free ChatGPT app for macOS takes full advantage of GPT-4o and is deeply integrated into the operating system. Works across a variety of apps and services. Users can access it using a shortcut (Option + Space).
The ChatGPT desktop app also supports voice conversations and will soon incorporate GPT-4o audio and video capabilities. Access to the ChatGPT app for macOS is currently limited to Plus subscribers, but will soon be available to all users.
There are many fake ChatGPT apps in the Mac App Store, but the official app is not yet listed on the platform. Some users have reported downloading apps directly from OpenAI's directory. When I try to log in, I get a “Coming Soon” message, and access appears to be restricted to Plus users who pay $20 a month for the premium ChatGPT service.
Based on screenshots of the ChatGPT app for macOS, it appears to be optimized for desktop environments, as is the updated web version. It features a resizable window and allows users to directly upload screenshots of photos and text and ask questions based on them.
ChatGPT adheres to an Apple-first approach, first releasing a mobile app for iPhone and an Android version a few months later. Similarly, the desktop app is currently available for Mac users, and the company has confirmed that his ChatGPT app for Windows will be released later this year.
