Campus police received a report of shots fired inside a dorm just before 6 a.m. University police arrived at the dormitory at 6:05 a.m. and found two people dead, Cronin said. All had at least one gunshot wound.
“We do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the community at this time,” spokeswoman Ira Cronin said at a news conference. “And we are investigating this as an isolated incident.”
Homicide detectives have taken over the investigation and are working to piece together what happened and notify next of kin, Cronin said.
Cronin said the official cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner's office in the “coming days.”
CNN affiliate KKTV spoke to students who were on campus when the shooting occurred.
“Honestly, I was shocked,” Adam Trujillo said. “I woke up to an email from one of my teachers telling me there was a lockdown going on and to please lock my door for safety. I met some members of the press and they were pretty shocked.”
Campus police and the Colorado Springs Police Department said the shooting did not involve an active shooter situation, but it was an incident of violence on campus. lockdown Dormitory residents were then ordered to shelter in place for several hours.
“Lockdown! Please lock internal doors,” said an alert sent by campus police shortly after 7 a.m. “Turn off the lights. Keep out of sight. Don't open the door. Remain silent. Evasion/defense.”
Minutes later, university police announced there were no reports of a shooter, but asked people on campus to shelter in place. Just before 8 a.m., police announced that everyone could leave campus, except for students in Alpine Village, a dormitory housing second-year students through graduate students.
At 8:52 a.m., campus police announced that there were “no safety concerns on campus” and that the shelter-in-place order for Alpine Village was “due to an ongoing investigation.”The order was completely lifted at 9:36 a.m.
“We ask that you do not return to campus until instructed to do so,” campus police said. “The UCCS campus is currently closed. The UCCS Police Department is working with the Colorado Springs Police Department and will provide updates as information becomes available.”
The campus will be closed Saturday and Sunday, according to a social media post from the university. Classes were also canceled on Monday, but the university announced that the campus would be open for “support and healing.”
