India is set to welcome two complete semiconductor manufacturing plants with significant investment, as confirmed by Electronics and IT Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar. The project includes an $8 billion offer from Israel-based Tower Semiconductors and an offer from the Tata Group.
Mr. Chandrasekhar revealed this exciting development and highlighted the significant investment and technological advancements involved. The manufacturing facility will operate with his state-of-the-art 65, 40 and 28 nanometer technologies, and additional packaging proposals are also being considered.
Replying to a question on Tower Semiconductors' $8 billion investment plan and India's semiconductor roadmap, the minister said these projects would be delayed in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's third term if not approved before the next general election. I was adamant that I would get the go-ahead.
Mr. Chandrasekhar underlined the credibility and importance of the investment proposal and mentioned Tata's involvement in semiconductor manufacturing initiatives. He expressed his confidence in the speedy realization of these projects.
The government has received a number of proposals for semiconductor manufacturing and chip assembly, test, monitoring and packaging (ATMP) units. These proposals complement US-based memory chip maker Micron's significant investment in Gujarat and further strengthen India's position in the semiconductor industry.
