The Humane AI pin, Rabbit R1, and Meta sunglasses were considered to usher in a new era of AI devices. However, due to its unfinished state, it never launched, with key features promised to be “coming soon.” This begs the question – do we really need AI gadgets? Couldn’t we leverage AI from our smartphones instead? So I set out to answer this question and explore the AI that is already available on smartphones. We tried to recreate the functionality of these AI gadgets using an app.
In this comparison, we'll introduce you to some of the features these dedicated AI gadgets offer and see which AI apps can simulate a similar experience on your phone. Also mention how good they are at performing certain actions.
Ask a question using voice commands
The main use case for these AI devices is being able to ask a question aloud about whatever is going through your mind and get a near-accurate answer to it. The AI app we used here can do the same thing.apps like Gemini, ChatGPT, and Copilot support voice commands, so you don't have to use your phone's keyboard. ChatGPT Voice also lets you choose from a variety of voice models.
Gemini on Android: Set reminders, timers and read recent emails, send messages and make calls. This is one of the features that is currently limited to Android devices and cannot be run on iOS devices or other AI apps. As you can see in the screenshot below, in some cases Gemini will trigger her Google Assistant on her Android to perform certain actions automatically.
We are in the early stages of AI, so They tend to hallucinate and give wrong answers I can be overconfident at times. This problem is also prevalent in AI hardware devices. The app also saves a record of all your conversations with users, so you can go back and revisit them whenever you like, just like with Humane AI Pins.
Performing a visual search
Similar to AI gadgets; Visually search your surroundings Use the AI app's camera tool. This can be found in Gemini and Copilot. Just tap the camera icon, click a photo, and ask a question. You can also upload photos from your device library for visual search. In my use, Gemini and Copilot have responded well. On the other hand, using ChatGPT requires a subscription to ChatGPT Plus.
Gemini and Copilot are both available on iOS, so iPhone users can do visual searches without any problems.
Translate conversations in real time
Humane AI Pin and Rabbit R1 provide live translation services across multiple languages. The AI apps mentioned above have the ability to translate words, phrases, and text, but they cannot translate conversations in real-time.
that too It's not easy to get them to translate. For example, ChatGPT recognizes the language you speak and responds in the same language. A transcript of the conversation will also be displayed in that language. So for the translation to work you need to include “Translate x to English” for fairly accurate results.
Samsung devices recently added AI features for live translation during calls, but as you can see from the bizarre conversation recording above, they can be hit or miss.Besides these, you can also Use Google Translate and the iPhone Translate app Achieve reliable image and text translation. Google Gemini may support interpreted mode later.
Using third party apps
Rabbit R1 allows you to interact with several services, including Spotify, Doordash, Uber, and Midjourney. However, instead of a direct integration, Rabbit uses your login information to access your site and perform activities on your behalf. Use credits where credit is due, and AI apps cannot interact with third-party services.
ChatGPT supports plugins, but there is no easy way to make them work on mobile. Other than that, just Gemini has extensions to connect with other Google services. You can query data details and summarize emails and YouTube videos from Google Drive. We recently added the YouTube Music extension, which lets you play music and provide recommendations based on your mood.
Creating AI artwork
Rabbit R1's Midjourney integration lets you create AI images with voice commands. Pretty cool, right? However, to download the image, you will need to access Discord instead of doing it from the device itself. Remember, you need a Midjourney subscription to get started.can Do the same for all three AI apps And download the image immediately.
Copilot and ChatGPT both use DALL E 3 to generate images, but Gemini generates images on its own. All of these apps support voice commands, so Create photos without touching your phone screen. Copilot and Gemini can generate images in their free versions, but this feature requires a subscription to ChatGPT.
I noticed that Free image generation returns somewhat blurry and unrealistic results Comparison with paid version. The results from ChatGPT and Gemini Advanced were sharper and more detailed than those I got from the free versions of Copilot and Gemini. One thing to note is that Gemini does not create images of human subjects, due to various image fiascos.
Instant access to AI
These gadgets are built solely with AI in mind, so when you use one of them; Instant access to AI chatbots Just press the button. No need to unlock your phone and then open any AI app that is difficult to copy. However, there are a few ways I've found to instantly launch AI apps on your phone.
Some Android devices have a back tap gesture to open apps on your phone.use Quickly launch AI apps with back tap gesture. Samsung devices allow you to customize the side key to launch specific apps, so if you have a Samsung phone, give it a try. iPhone users can create backtap shortcuts to instantly launch AI apps. Added iCloud link for shortcuts that trigger ChatGPT audio. Try it yourself.
Pricing and subscription
The additional cost that you have to spend on these AI devices is the biggest problem people have with AI devices. Humane AI Pins start with: 700 dollars Separate monthly subscription required. It costs only Rabbit R1. 200 dollars It also requires its own data plan to work outside of Wi-Fi.
You can save all this money by using your mobile phone. All the apps introduced here are free to use. Most of the AI features are in the free version, including:
- Object detection and scene analysis (Gemini and Copilot only)
- generative response
- Access real-time data (Gemini and Copilot only)
- AI image generation (Gemini and Copilot only)
- Voice command support
- Conversation history
A premium subscription unlocks the full potential of the app's features, including access to the latest models, priority access during peak hours, faster response times, and future features. For this, you need to pay $20 for GPT Plus and Copilot Premium. Gemini Advanced also comes with 2 TB of Google Cloud storage for the same price.
Do you really need an AI gadget?
The idea of these AI devices sounds great at first, but in reality it makes little sense outside of a few niche situations. How often do you see people using voice commands in public? Your phone may not recognize it correctly and there's no shame in trying again.
me too We do not discuss how long these devices take to answer questions or perform certain tasks. You might wait nervously for a minute or two while your device translates what you said or generates an image. And in the end I could still be wrong. By contract, AI apps are faster and more accurate. Except for Copilot, responses may take some time.
Yes, AI gadgets eliminate the distractions of smartphones. But instead, I want to build AI integration into existing devices like headphones and smartwatches. There is no ChatGPT support recently added to the latest Ear and Ear (a) buds. This allows you to trigger ChatGPT audio without waking up your device. This is something we hope more devices will start adopting. And we have previously shown that with the help of AI, anything you say on the phone can be accomplished.
